Eyewitness: Icelandic volcano

Flight restrictions are still being imposed, leaving many air passengers stranded, and in Iceland farmers are struggling to save their livestock as volcanic ash covers the fields they graze on.
Here, Gina Christie, who lives near the site of the volcano, describes the impact the continuing eruption is having on the local area.
Icelanders have been trying to clear up the ash

I woke up on Friday with a weird feeling that something just wasn't right. It wasn't light as it normally is - we don't really have night-time at this time of year.
I looked outside and there was a thick, black cloud of ash directly above us. It was exactly like the middle of winter. What is even more surreal was the absolute bright daylight on either side of our village.
'Thick, black goop'
The wind changed and it rained ash. Everything, absolutely everything is coated in a thick, black gloop. All my beautiful flowers and rhubarb are soaked in it. I have no idea if any of them will survive or not.
Today, we have had a little more ash fall but tomorrow the wind is meant to change again and it will be directly over our village again.
We have spent the last three days vacuuming, mopping and watering down the walls and roof of our house.
Although there is no threat to tourists, many have cancelled

We have also been trying to water the grass, the surrounding deck and the car park to try and dampen the ash - once it dries, it is very, very nasty and blows everywhere with the smallest puff of air.
The roads have all become very dusty despite being tarmac and it is now like driving on the dirt roads in Africa.
The poor farmers to the east of us have been horribly affected. Many of them have either had to send their horses, sheep and cattle to the slaughterhouse early or try desperately to get their livestock moved to other grazing lands.
Another big impact has been on tourism which makes up nearly 40% of our GDP. My husband manages a very large, popular salmon fishing river and although there is no threat to tourists, unfortunately many have cancelled.software life

Senate Plans to End Debate, Clear Way for Financial-Bill Vote

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he may file a procedural motion today aimed at cutting off debate and moving to a final vote on financial-regulation legislation.
Democrats will file the motion “as soon as tonight” with the goal of holding a final vote this week, Reid said today from the Senate floor. The measure is necessary to hold Wall Street accountable, the Nevada Democrat said.
“Democrats and Republicans have voted for each other’s amendments,” Reid said. “This is the way it should be. But the end must come.”
The Senate began debating and voting on the bill, offered by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, two weeks ago after breaking a logjam over language that Republicans said would perpetuate Wall Street bailouts. Among other things, the legislation would create a consumer financial protection bureau at the Federal Reserve and a council of regulators to monitor risks to the economy.
Democrats, who have 59 votes, need at least one Republican to join in the motion to end debate, which requires the approval of 60 senators.nike, my best choice

day before

The next day I was walking at tHe same place as I did the day before. Again I met Chen Ran, the two-year-old boy. He was alone and greeted me, by saying "Walking" I said "yes." Laughing to my amusement, I think the boy is really learning to speak quiekly. So whenever I was walking and when he saw me he would my, "walking." One day I met Chen Ran. He was having difficulty getting his mini-bike out of the roadside. He said to me, "Walking, you do it." It was not until this moment that I realized he took it for granted that my name was "walking". Amused, I helped him get his bike. And he called me Aunt Walking till he was old enongh to know his mistake.

expand application

The developments of wireless communications technologies has only improve data transmission rate and reliability and enhance the system functions, but also expand application and service area. However, the instability characteristics of wireless channel sell discount wedding dresses inevitably leads to data transmission errors. On the other hand, new multimedia services set forth more requirements for network reliability and data transmission rate. As a high performance error control technique, Automatic Repeat reQuest(ARQ) has been widely used and now it has become one of the blog lace wedding dresses most important technologies in the data link layer of wireless communication system.Though ARQ can solve the wired network (e.g. Ethernet) data transmission new shoes 2010 problems well, because wireless link has a greater delay and higher bit error rate than cable networks, perfect solutions for wireless network have not occurred up to now. Most of the existing improvements of cheap evening dresses techniques are feedback-based mechanism. Although the improved cheap shoes blog 2010 technology can enhance transmission efficiency, uncertain data transmission quality of wireless networks makes only one kind of ARQ feedback technologies is not able to provide perfect real-time error control. This thesis presents a new feedback algorithm which can improve the utilization efficiency of current network resources. This thesis introduces the IEEE802.16 standards, discusses the ARQ mechanism and provides the realistic implemention. Because ARQ in IEEE802.16e standard does not require specific methods, we design the data transmission reception approach as well as the feedback options. The ARQ subsystem is based on Linux kernel v2.6 and Picochip-HDP hardware platform. The tests show that the new algorithm and ARQ mechanism can increase resource utilization.
